Stock Glass Packaging or a Custom Mold?
Short answer: choose a stock jar or bottle for a faster sample, a proven catalogue shape and a controlled first launch. Choose a custom mould when the silhouette, neck or closure is a real brand asset and expected volume supports development. A staged path—stock first, custom later—often gives an importer the best learning cycle.
What stock means
Stock means the glass body already exists and can be matched with available closures, decoration and export packing. Reihey’s catalogue includes mason jars, honey jars, cream jars and dropper bottles. Buyers can compare sizes within a family instead of beginning with a new drawing.
When custom earns its place
A custom mould makes sense when a distinctive shoulder, base, embossing detail or proprietary neck improves recognition, grip, decoration area or closure fit. “Custom” alone is not a benefit; the buyer should identify the specific commercial reason and allow time for drawings, samples and approval stages.
Compare the complete project
Compare the body, closure, decoration, inner protection, carton configuration, sample work and freight assumptions. For custom development, add mould, engineering, trial-sample and approval costs. Separate recurring packaging cost from one-time development cost so a catalogue unit price is not mistaken for the final landed project cost.
Decoration can make stock feel proprietary
A clear stock jar can look distinctive through a consistent label system, screen printing, colour treatment, cap colour and outer box. Frosted cosmetic jars can create a softer brand position without changing the silhouette. Judge the assembled pack, not a bare glass body on a screen.
Export packing is part of the product
Include destination, pallet or container plan, carton preference, inner separators and whether sizes are mixed. A custom shape may need a different separator or create wasted carton space; a regular stock shape may offer a more predictable export pack.
Simple decision matrix
- Stock: speed, sample learning, size testing and controlled first order.
- Custom: recognition, proprietary fit or meaningful structural advantage.
- Staged: validate the market now while keeping a route to a signature package.
